The Gaming Operations Bureau is under the direction of DCI Assistant Director Charis Paulson. Charis was appointed to this position on November 16, 2007. Charis has been a member of the Division of Criminal investigation since 1994 and has held Special Agent positions in both the Gaming Bureau and Major Crime Unit. Prior to being appointed to Assistant Director, she was the Special Agent in Charge of the Central Iowa Gaming Unit.

Charis is a 1990 graduate of Buena Vista University with a degree in Business Administration and a 1992 graduate of Drake University where she received her Masters degree in Business Administration. Charis is also a graduate of Northwestern University's School of Police Staff and Command and Drake University's Certified Public Manager Program.

The Gaming Operations Bureau was created in 1989 to ensure public confidence and trust in Iowa's expanding gaming industry. Primary responsibilities of the agents assigned to this bureau are conducting criminal investigations, background investigations, and providing regulatory enforcement at Iowa's 17 state-licensed casinos. Agents are also responsible for enforcement of Iowa's laws in reference to illegal gambling, amusement devices, social & charitable gaming, lotteries, and tribal gaming compacts.
