The district maintains a highly visible security presence at the State Capitol and surrounding complex including the grounds of Terrace Hill. This is accomplished by utilizing multiple tools including patrolling the grounds by foot, bicycle and vehicle. This mission is aided by the use of a video surveillance system in some areas.

The troopers are responsible for the security and safety of all persons on the property including the Governor and First Family of Iowa, Lieutenant Governor, Supreme Court Justices, State of Iowa Senators, members of the Iowa House of Representatives and all visiting dignitaries. Additionally, there is a team of District 16 troopers assigned specifically to the protection of the Governor, First Lady and Lieutenant Governor of Iowa. This select group of troopers travels with their principal protectee throughout the country and abroad as they represent the State of Iowa.
