Don't Veer For Deer
Most deer crash deaths and serious injuries occur when motorists veer to avoid hitting deer as in the following incident.
This collision occurred along northbound Highway #151 in Jones County. The driver stated that a deer ran out in front of his/her vehicle and he/she swerved to the left to avoid hitting the animal. The driver then lost control of the car and the car slid across the southbound lane of travel. The vehicle continued across the southbound shoulder through the cable guardrail. After going through the cables, the car slid over the grassy embankment and over the edge of a culvert. The culvert was approximately 20 feet high. The car went off the top of the culvert and hit front bumper first, on the cement base of the culvert. The car then fell over onto its top.
A passenger was killed as a result of this collision. Striking the deer and maintaining control of the vehicle would have likely saved the passengers life. |
