The Iowa Governor's Traffic Safety Bureau is a subdivision of the Iowa Department of Public Safety. Each state is required to have a highway safety program consistent with the uniform guidelines issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The Iowa Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau (GTSB) administers the State of Iowa’s allocation of federal highway safety funds authorized on July 6, 2012, when President Obama signed into law P. L. 112-1412, the Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century Act (MAP-21). MAP-21 authorizes the federal surface transportation programs for highways, highway safety and transit. |

The Mission of the GTSB is to identify traffic safety problems and thereon develop and implement traffic safety programs designed to reduce death and injury on Iowa’s streets and highways through partnerships with local, county, state, and private sector agencies. As such, the GTSB provides federally-funded grants to city, county and state entities, as well as hospitals, universities, and other non-profit agencies working to improve traffic safety in the State of Iowa.
