Youth Drivers Title Graphic

The Iowa Department of Public Safety-Governor's Traffic Safety Bureau (GTSB) is focused on helping deter one of Iowa's and the nation's bleakest statistics. In Iowa and the nation, the leading cause of death in young people, ages 15-20, is fatal vehicle crashes. Nationwide, a total of 4,283 drivers ages 15-20 were involved in fatal crashes in 2012 and 1,875 of those young drivers lost their lives. In Iowa, 49 drivers under the age of 20 were involved in fatal crashes in 2012.

Several factors contribute to these unfortunate statistics:

  • Inexperience
  • Distracted Driving
  • Texting While Driving
  • Alcohol Use
  • Speeding
  • No Seat Belt Used
