Eugene T. Meyer was appointed Commissioner of the Iowa Department of Public Safety by Governor Chester J. Culver on January 12, 2007. He is the 20th person to serve as Commissioner of Public Safety since its inception.

The Commissioner's office of the Iowa Department of Public Safety is comprised of five (5) bureaus that provide assistance and support to the divisions and other law enforcement and fire service agencies. They are:

• Governor's Traffic Safety Bureau
• Intelligence Bureau
• Plans, Research & Training Bureau
• Professional Standards Bureau
• Public Information Bureau
