Monona County, IOWA --- On Monday, January 25, 2010 at approximately 9:00 a.m., a series of multi-vehicle accidents occurred on I-29 southbound at the 125 mile marker in Monona County.  The interstate at the time was 100% snow and ice covered and visibility was zero.

The first personal injury accident involved 2 cars and a semi.  One subject was transported by ambulance and is reported to be in critical condition.

A second accident occurred when Iowa State Patrol Trooper Michael Kober #426 was assisting the first, personal injury accident.  Trooper Kober was out of his car assisting individuals in the first accident when a semi tanker rear-ended his patrol car.  No injuries were reported in this accident. 

The third and final accident at the scene occurred when yet another motorist drove into vehicles that were involved in the first accident.

The interstate was closed for a short period in order to allow emergency personnel to safely clean up the accidents.

Interstate 29 continues to be 100% snow and ice covered and travel is not recommended at this time.  In addition, the National Weather Service has issued a Blizzard warning until midnight tonight.  Motorists are urged to carefully monitor the weather and road conditions to determine the safest course of action when considering travel.
