Chariton, IOWA --- Twelve year old Jacen Paul Pearson has been taken into custody and transferred to Meyer hall.  At this time charges have not been filed.

On February 10, 2010, at approximately 5:24 p.m., the Lucas County Dispatch Center received a 911 call in reference to a shooting that had occurred at 20968 475th in Chariton, Iowa.  The Lucas County Sheriff's Office and the Chariton Police Department responded to the scene.  When officers arrived, one adult male victim was deceased.  That individual has been identified as 37 year old Tod Peek.  Peek was the stepfather to Pearson. 

Upon arrival, officers also found one juvenile female victim suffering from a gunshot wound.  The juvenile female victim, five year old Cheyanne Peek, was transported to the Lucas County Hospital and then transported to Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa.  Cheyanne Peek’s condition is unknown at this time.

According to witnesses Pearson left the residence after the shooting and prior to police arriving.  He was later located and taken into custody, approximately a half mile from the residence.  

An autopsy is being performed today by the Iowa State Medical Examiner’s office in Ankeny, Iowa.

The investigation is ongoing.  The Lucas County Sheriff’s office, Chariton Police Department, Iowa State Patrol and the Division of Criminal Investigation are cooperatively conducting the investigation.

Note: A criminal charge is merely an accusation and a defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
