Burlington, IOWA --- At approximately 4 a.m., March 17, 2010, members of the Southeast Iowa Narcotics Task Force along with members of the Lee County Narcotics Task Force were working a joint investigation dealing with the manufacture of methamphetamine in Southeast Iowa in the 1900 block of 355th Avenue, Wever, Iowa (Lee County).

During the course of the investigation officers were confronted by a subject in possession of an anhydrous ammonia tank. The suspect, Earl William Freeman, 51, of Burlington, approached officers spraying anhydrous ammonia at them. During the altercation Freeman was shot by officers.

Freeman was taken to Great River Medical Center (GRMC) by ambulance and later transported to Iowa City where he is being treated for his injuries. Officers were treated at GRMC for exposure to the anhydrous ammonia and released.

The Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) is investigating this incident with assistance from Lee County Attorney's Office and the Des Moines County Attorney's Office. The investigation is ongoing.

Note: A criminal charge is merely an accusation and a defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
