Des Moines, IOWA --- Nearly 300 traffic safety professionals from around the state, region and nation will gather at the  Marriott, 300 East 9th Street, Coralville, Iowa  on March 24-25, 2010 to discuss the latest issues in highway traffic safety.  Several key topics being discussed at the conference include:

The Iowa Department of Public Safety annually recognizes outstanding traffic safety contributions by individuals with the Commissioner’s Special Award for Traffic Safety.  These awards will be presented Thursday, March 25, 2010 during the Awards Luncheon.  Selection for these awards is based on a commitment to traffic safety and service provided beyond routine duties, creativity of approach, and effectiveness of a traffic safety program or campaign.  To be considered for an award, individuals must have contributed in a leadership role to traffic safety issues through promotion and awareness in his/her area of expertise.

Iowa experienced a near-record low in motor-vehicle fatalities during 2009 (373). However, over 130 persons died unbelted in Iowa crashes including more than 60% of the vehicle drivers/ passengers at night (61) compared to 40% of daytime drivers/passengers (56 deaths).
