Take time during Arson Awareness Week to evaluate your business' security level and how you can protect it from arson in the future.

Des Moines, IOWA --- When taking time to protect your business from arson, the first thing you should do is assess the potential risk to your business. Identify all of the means by which someone could deliberately start a fire inside or outside your business or office.

  • Check police reports to find out if any small fires have been reported in your area recently.
  • Talk to neighbors and other local businesses to see if they’ve noticed suspicious activity.
  • Be on the lookout for other forms of vandalism like graffiti.
  • Are there piles of old boxes or other trash that could be easily ignited lying near your building?

  • Have you noticed anyone loitering within your business?
  • Are there any items within your business that could be used to ignite a fire?
  • Do you have flammable liquids that are easily accessible by patrons, contractors or employees?
  • Do you have piles of trash or other inventory waste that collects for weeks before being taken to the trash?
  • Examine restrooms within your business for fire hazards or ignitable materials as many intentional structure fires are started there.

The Office of the State Fire Marshal investigated 14 arson fires at businesses across Iowa in 2009.  Don’t let you and your business become victims of arson in 2010.
