PEACE OFFICER MEMORIAL CEREMONY HELD FRIDAY, MAY 14, 2010 ~ MARKED WITH ADDITION OF 15 OFFICERS

Des Moines, IOWA --- All officers who give their lives in the line of duty should be honored and respected for the sacrifice made in protecting the citizens of Iowa.  This year it is with great pride the State of Iowa takes time during Peace Officer Memorial Week to honor 15 such officers.  These 15 men being added to the Memorial each died while working to apprehend a suspect, protect their community from crime, or maintain order.

“All Iowans owe a debt of gratitude to the men and women who serve and protect our communities,” said Lt. Governor Patty Judge. “Today, and every day, we honor and respect those who have fallen in the line of duty. As Iowans, we will always remember their sacrifice.”

Of the 15 officers being added to the Peace Officer Memorial today, the most recently deceased died in 1993.  The officer receiving recognition today who gave his life in the most distant past died in 1891.  Most officers worked for local municipal police or sheriff’s departments; however several officers killed in the line of duty worked for railroad police departments, a sign of the transportation and security needs of the time.

Commissioner Eugene T. Meyer said, “I witness everyday just how committed today’s law enforcement officers are to protecting Iowans.  Today we pause and honor the memory of the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice, so that we may remain safe.”

In addition to the 15 officers being added to the Memorial today we also recognize the 141 other Iowa officers who are listed as killed in action.  We invite you to take time today to honor the men and women who’ve died to protect and serve, as well as give thanks to those officers who continue to work in our communities every day.
