MEDIA ADVISORY: DNE URGES IOWANS TO TAKE BACK UNUSED PRESCRIPTION DRUGS

Des Moines, IOWA --- On Friday, September 24, 2010 and Saturday, September 25, 2010, the Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement (DNE) is teaming up with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and its community partners to take part in the first ever nationwide prescription drug take-back. Iowans can turn in their unused, unneeded and expired prescription medications at collection sites across Iowa.

  • Unused or expired prescription medications are a public safety issue, leading to accidental poisoning, overdose and abuse.
  • This service is free and anonymous.
  • Tablets, capsules, and all other solid dosage forms will be collected. Intraveneous solutions, injectibles, and syringes will not be accepted.
  • Illicit substances such as marijuana or methamphetamine are not a part of this initiative.
WHAT: DNE and DEA Officials will take back unused prescription drugs as part of the first ever nationwide prescription drug take-back.
