27 TO ENTER BASIC ACADEMY MONDAY,
TRAIN FOR LIFE OF SERVICE TO IOWANS

Johnston, IOWA --- This coming Monday, November 29, 2010, 27 men and women from across Iowa and the United States will begin a 20 week journey to becoming sworn officers of the law.  The 35th Department of Public Safety (DPS) Basic Academy will commence at 8:00 a.m., on Monday, marking a new chapter in the life of each individual and the state’s largest law enforcement agency.

Lieutenant Jeff Ritzman, Academy Commander and Bureau Chief of the Training and Recruitment Bureau said the entire Department is eagerly anticipating the beginning of the Academy.  “The hiring process is long and thorough.  To become a sworn officer with DPS you have to meet a very high standard.  We’re all very excited to have these fine men and women join our ranks.  But they’ve got a lot of work ahead of them first.”

The 20 week DPS Basic Academy is a challenging and difficult course to complete.  Recruits live full-time with their training officers in the barracks of Camp Dodge and daily test their mental and physical limits in both the classroom and the gym.  Once each recruit has passed the required standards and successfully completed the 20 week Academy, they will be officially sworn-in as peace officers of DPS in a ceremony scheduled for late spring.

Executive Officer Steve Bogle greeted the new recruits at an Academy orientation earlier this month, “These are exciting times for law enforcement.  There are new technologies now available to us and with that, new opportunities.  I am extremely confident that our new Agents and Troopers will bring with them a zeal for the future while remaining committed to the value of service that has always made DPS a great organization.”
