CHARGES FILED AGAINST CHRISTOPHER BROWNLEE

Local Contact: Des Moines County Attorney (319) 753-8209

Des Moines, IOWA --- On December 4, 2010, at approximately 3:35 p.m., Des Moines County Dispatch received a call for assistance from Great River Medical Center.  Hospital staff reported that Christopher O. Brownlee, age 24, had stolen a pickup truck from the hospital parking lot.

Law enforcement officers from the West Burlington Police Department, Des Moines County Sheriff’s Office and the Iowa State Patrol responded and spotted the stolen truck exiting the hospital parking lot.  At that time, Brownlee eluded police and led them on a high-speed chase north towards Pleasant Grove.

State Troopers positioned themselves in front of the pursuit at the intersection of Pleasant Grove Road and Danville Road in an attempt to deploy stop sticks.  Sgt. Troy Bailey had exited his patrol vehicle to deploy the stop sticks, but realized that the stolen truck was approaching him too rapidly.  As the stolen truck approached Sgt. Bailey and his patrol unit, he was in fear for his safety as Brownlee was not slowing down or yielding for Sgt. Bailey’s emergency lights.  Sgt. Bailey had to jump out of harm’s way and while doing so fired two shots at the oncoming vehicle.  The shots that were fired struck the stolen truck and Brownlee was uninjured from the shooting incident. Brownlee continued westbound in the stolen truck on Pleasant Grove Road and eventually lost control of the vehicle.  Brownlee was taken into custody at that time.

Christopher Brownlee has been arrested and charged with Theft in the Second Degree and Eluding a Peace Officer, both class D felonies.  He is being held at the Des Moines County Jail.  To view the press release issued by the Des Moines County Attorney click here.
