FIRE MARSHAL TO DISTRIBUTE BATTERIES |
||||||||||||||||
|
Ames, IOWA --- In its efforts to cover more Iowans with working smoke detectors, this weekend the Office of the State Fire Marshal will distribute 13,000 nine-volt batteries to fire departments across the state. Local firefighters can participate in Operation Safe Senior when their department pledges to check for and install the free batteries in smoke detectors at the homes of seniors when dispatched for welfare checks, home hazard inspections and medical calls. The program was created through a partnership with the Iowa Department on Aging, American Red Cross, and Energizer Batteries, in hopes of protecting the Greatest Generation from the life-threatening effects of home fires. In Iowa alone over the last 5 years, more than 25 percent of the state’s fire fatalities were citizens over the age of 65.
