Red Oak, IOWA --- Additional details are being released this morning after 17 year old Betsy Luna was found safe in Red Oak, Iowa.  An extensive investigation by law enforcement has been conducted, revealing no abduction ever occurred.

At approximately 3:30 p.m., on Saturday, February 19, 2011, Luna’s foster family reported Luna missing to local law enforcement.  Initial investigative efforts by law enforcement indicated that Betsy Luna may have been abducted by her uncle, 36 year old Jesus Hernandez of Lenox, Iowa and that Luna may be in immediate physical danger.  Based upon this information, request for an AMBER Alert was submitted to the Iowa State Patrol.  All criteria for an AMBER Alert were met and the Alert was issued to the public at 7:49 p.m.

Nearly an hour into the AMBER Alert, Jesus Hernandez voluntarily made contact with local law enforcement in Lenox, Iowa claiming he never had contact with Luna.

Additionally, county and city law enforcement made contact with Luna’s purported boyfriend, 19 year old Fidel Ramos in Red Oak, Iowa.  At approximately 9:23 p.m., law enforcement searched the home of Ramos and found Betsy Luna, safe, hiding in the residence.  Both individuals were taken in for questioning.

The AMBER Alert was cancelled at 9:35 p.m.

Charges are pending and the investigation into this incident continues with the help of the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, Iowa State Patrol, Red Oak Police Department, Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, Essex Police Department, Page County Attorney, and the Immigration and Naturalization Service.
