Sigourney, IOWA --- After a short exchange of fire at 18327 249th St., Sigourney, Iowa, 38 year old Sheriff’s Deputy Eric Stein was shot and killed.

Shortly before noon on Monday, April 4, 2011, three deputies with the Keokuk County Sheriff’s Office went to the 249th Street address, to talk to 53 year old Jeff Krier about an incident that reportedly occurred the night before.  When they arrived at the Krier residence, the deputies received fire.  Deputy Stein was shot and subsequently died of his wounds.  Sheriff Jeff Shipley and Deputy Casey Hinnah, also at the Krier residence, were uninjured. They retreated and requested immediate assistance via radio.

Multiple agencies from the surrounding communities and counties, as well as various Divisions of the Iowa Department of Public Safety responded to the area.  For several hours, Krier remained in his residence, refusing to come out.  Then at approximately 2:50 PM Krier exited the residence armed with weapons.  At that time, members of the Iowa State Patrol Tactical Unit fired on Krier.  He was shot and killed at the scene.
