Notice to the Communities in Sigourney and Keokuk County Regarding the Funeral of Sgt. Eric Stein

Sigourney, IOWA – In anticipation of the upcoming funeral services for Sgt. Eric Stein, the local authorities in Sigourney, Iowa and Keokuk County would like to offer some additional information regarding community support and traffic control.

Following the funeral service on Saturday, April 9, 2011 at the Sigourney Jr/Sr High School, there will be a funeral procession to escort Sgt. Stein to the cemetery.  Community members are encouraged to show their thanks and support to Sgt. Stein and his family by gathering on the East, North, and West sides of the town square, and waiving the processional through.  If you would like to participate in this event, after 6:00 PM tonight, Friday, April 08, 2011, please pick up an American Flag, free of charge, at one of the following locations in Sigourney:

  • Subway Restaurant
  • Casey’s General Store
  • Pamida

The processional is expected to begin at 2:30 PM, Saturday, April 9, 2011.

Additionally, prior to the funeral, and particularly during the processional, navigating through some parts of Sigourney and Keokuk County may be difficult.  Funeral organizers are anticipating a large turn-out and much more traffic than is typical.  For the community’s awareness and travel planning, here is the processional route:

The processional will begin at the Jr/Sr High School, travel west along E. Pleasant Valley St. and then thread through the town of Sigourney, passing through the town square and past the Sheriff’s Office.  From there the processional will travel north out of town on 200th Ave.  Then, motorists will proceed west on Hwy 22, south on Hwy 21 and east on Hwy 92, to arrive at the cemetery at 145th Ave. and Hwy 92.

Please remember that Governor Terry E. Branstad has ordered all flags lowered to half-staff beginning at noon, today, April 8, 2011 until 8:00 AM Monday, April 11, 2011.

The family of Sgt. Stein and community leaders in Sigourney and Keokuk County would like to thank the local community for their support and patience during this difficult time.
