Investigation of Columbus Junction Fire Complete

Columbus Junction, IOWA --- Agents with the Office of the State Fire Marshal have completed their investigation into the March 26, 2011 fire in Columbus Junction, Iowa. Investigators have ruled the cause of the fire to be accidental, with the fire originating on the kitchen stove.

On March 26, 2011 at 2:42pm, the Louisa County Dispatch Center received a 911 call of a fire located at 110 Main Street in Columbus Junction, Iowa. The Columbus Junction Fire Department responded to the scene. Upon arrival firefighters discovered there was a subject trapped inside the structure. This subject was subsequently pronounced dead at the scene. Additionally, two subjects were injured in the fire. One was taken by Air Care to University of Iowa Hospitals. The other refused treatment at the scene. While searching the building, firefighters found a second, deceased subject.

The following is a list of the victims involved in the fire at 110 Main Street in Columbus Junction:

Deceased #1: Timothy L. Miles, 52, 110 Mains Street, Columbus Junction, Iowa.

Injured #1: Paul Buffington, 76, homeowner, transported by Air Care to University Of Iowa Hospitals.

Injured #2: Percy Taylor, 48, 110 Main Street Columbus Junction, Iowa, refused treatment at the scene.

Deceased #2: James A. Mitchell, 57, 110 Main Street Columbus Junction, Iowa.

     The Columbus Junction Fire Department was assisted by: Conesville Fire Department, Wapello Fire Department. The investigation was cooperatively conducted by the Iowa State Fire Marshall’s Office and the Columbus Junction Police Department. Assistance was also given by the Iowa State Patrol, Louisa County Sheriff’s Office and Louisa County Ambulance.
