EIGHT NAMES ADDED TO THE 2011 IOWA
PEACE OFFICER MEMORIAL

Des Moines, IOWA --- It is with great pride the State of Iowa takes time during Peace Officer Memorial Week to honor officers who have given their lives in the line of duty.  At a ceremony today, on the Capitol Complex, eight officers were added to the Memorial. Each died while working to apprehend a suspect or protect their community.

Of the eight officers being added to the Peace Officer Memorial today, the officer who gave his life in the most distant past died in 1886.  The officer receiving recognition today that died most recently was Sgt, Eric Stein of the Keokuk County Sheriff's Office. Stein died on April 4, 2011 after receiving fire from a barricaded subject.

There are now 164 officers listed on the Iowa Peace Officer Memorial as killed in the line of duty.

Commissioner Larry L. Noble said, “Today we take a moment out of our busy lives to remember and honor the memory of the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice, so that we, as Iowans, may remain safe.”

We invite you to take time today to honor the men and women who’ve died to protect and serve, as well as give thanks to those officers who continue to work in our communities every day.
