DPS Celebrates Special Olympics Iowa at Torch Run Reception

Des Moines, IOWA --- To kick off the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics, the Iowa Department of Public Safety held a reception at the DPS Building today.

Each year law enforcement agencies across Iowa and the United States work to recognize the extraordinary efforts and achievements of the athletes of Special Olympics.  This is accomplished through a variety of fundraising efforts that are organized under the “Law Enforcement Torch Run” label.  At its base level, the Torch Run is an actual athletic event in which the Flame of Hope is escorted across our country.  But the Law Enforcement Torch Run also includes events like the Polar Plunges and the Department of Public Safety’s Crappy Tournament.  This year, the Crappy tournament raised $2,425 for Special Olympics Iowa.

Special Olympics athlete Mike Warren from Marshalltown, Iowa also attended. He talked to the group about the importance of Special Olympics in his life.

Governor Terry Branstad was also an honored guest at today’s reception.  In speaking to the DPS staff and Special Olympics representatives, Governor Branstad congratulated everyone on their hard work and success in making Special Olympics an important event in the lives of those with disabilities.

Special Olympics Iowa President Mark Reed thanks law enforcement for their efforts to support Special Olympics.

The Final Leg Torch Run begins at 12:00 PM at Nollen Plaza in downtown Des Moines.  Both the DPS reception and the Final Leg of the Law Enforcement Torch Run coincide with the beginning of the Special Olympics Iowa Summer Games.  The games run May 26-28, 2011.
