Trooper Discharges Firearm at Conclusion of Pursuit

Floyd, IOWA --- At approximately 1:15 PM this afternoon, an Iowa State Patrol Trooper discharged his duty firearm upon a man who was wanted in Wisconsin on probation violation, and was suspected of motor vehicle theft.

Earlier today, Wisconsin issued a warrant for probation violation for a man who went missing from a Wisconsin State Correctional Facility and was suspected of stealing a vehicle.  At approximately noon today, Iowa Troopers spotted the suspect and initiated a pursuit.  The suspect then left Iowa and entered Minnesota.  At that time, Minnesota authorities continued to pursue the suspect, until he again re-entered Iowa.  The Iowa State Patrol, Mitchell County Sheriff’s Office and the Osage Police Department followed the suspect to a location four miles east of Floyd, Iowa on County Road B-33.  Law enforcement conducted a PIT (Pursuit Intervention Technique) maneuver and the suspect ultimately rolled the stolen vehicle.

While attempting to take the suspect into custody, a Sheriff’s Deputy tried to employ a Tazer to subdue the suspect.  The Tazer did not make contact.  The suspect then charged at a Trooper with a knife.  At that time, the Trooper discharged his firearm, killing the suspect.

The name of the deceased suspect will not be released until family notification has been made.

The name of the Trooper will not be released at this time. The Trooper involved has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.
