ACCREDITATION ASSESSMENT TEAM INVITES PUBLIC COMMENT

Des Moines, Iowa – A team of assessors from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc., (CALEA), will arrive August 27, 2011, to examine all aspects of the Iowa Department of Public Safety’s (DPS) policy and procedures, management, operations, and support services.  DPS is comprised of the Administrative Services Division, Division of Criminal Investigation, Division of Intelligence, Division of the Iowa State Patrol, Division of Narcotics Enforcement, and the Division of the State Fire Marshal.

Verification by the assessors that DPS meets the Commission’s industry leading standards is part of a voluntary process to gain accreditation – a highly prized recognition of professional excellence in law enforcement.

As part of the on-site assessment, agency employees and members of the public are invited to offer comments through a public information call-in session Monday, August 29, 2011, between 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM.  Interested citizens should call (515) 725-6190 to participate.  Telephone comments are limited to ten minutes, and must address the agency’s ability to comply with CALEA’s standards.  To obtain a copy of CALEA’s standards, contact Accreditation Manager Jim Wachuta, (515) 725-6184.

Written comments about the Iowa Department of Public Safety’s ability to meet standards for accreditation may be sent to:  Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc., (CALEA), 13575 Heathcote Boulevard, Suite 320, Gainesville, Virginia, 20155.

A CALEA assessment team is composed of law enforcement practitioners from similar, but out-of-state agencies.  The assessors will review written materials, interview employees, and visit offices and other places where standards compliance can be witnessed.  The assessors for this review are:

Team Leader: Darrel E. Stilwell, Lieutenant Colonel-Retired
  Virginia State Police, Richmond, VA

Team Member: Ricardo Anderson, Sergeant-Retired
United States Capital Police, Washington, D.C.

Once the Commission’s assessors complete their review of DPS, they report back to the full Commission.  The full Commission then decides if DPS will be granted accredited status.

Accreditation is granted in three year increments, during which time the agency must submit annual reports attesting continued compliance with those standards under which they were initially accredited.
