New Details Released on Trooper Fatality Crash

Des Moines, IOWA --- Preliminary information surrounding the car crash that took the life of Trooper Mark Toney has been reviewed and is ready for public release.

The technical crash investigator with the Iowa State Patrol is reviewing witness statements, radio logs, and in-car camera video as he continues to investigate the September 20, 2011 fatal crash.  Thus far, investigators have determined:

• Communications logs from the Iowa State Patrol Communications Office in Des Moines indicate Trooper Toney began his shift at 3:58 PM.
• There is no communication between State Radio and Trooper Toney indicating his actions just prior to, or during the crash.  
• Neither State Radio nor Warren County Dispatch has records indicating Trooper Toney had a pending call for service or was initiating a traffic stop. 
• Witnesses have indicated the emergency lights were activated on Trooper Toney’s car prior to the crash.
• The first 911 calls regarding the crash were received by Warren County Dispatch at 4:44 PM on September 20, 2011.  You can hear a copy of the 911 calls here:

• The in-car camera video retrieved from Trooper Mark Toney’s patrol car did not contain audio or video for the time period prior to, or during the crash.
• The autopsy on Trooper Mark Toney was conducted on Wednesday, September 21, 2011 at the State Medical Examiner’s Office.  Results are still pending.

The investigator continues efforts to interview witnesses and review forensic evidence.  The official cause of the car crash is still undetermined.

Additionally, funeral arrangements have been scheduled for Trooper Mark Toney.
