Additional Details on the Funeral for Trooper Mark Toney

Des Moines, IOWA --- As Iowans across that state inquire about funeral arrangements for Trooper Mark Toney, the Iowa State Patrol and Concerns of Police Survivors (COPS) are providing additional details for those wishing to recognize the tragic death of a peace officer.

FUNERAL

The funeral for Trooper Mark Toney is being held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, September 24, 2011 at the Northview Middle School, 1302 N. Ankeny Blvd., in Ankeny, Iowa. There is ample parking in the north and south parking lots of the school. Please park in these locations, or as directed by traffic control personnel.

All attendees will enter from the south doors of the middle school.

Media Note: A designated parking place has been set for media vehicles. Please park at the realty offices (red roof) on the east side of Ankeny Blvd, just across from the middle school. You may then carry your equipment into the school. Please arrive early.

PROCESSIONAL

There will be a walking processional to the graveside service immediately following the funeral. Participants will march north on Ankeny Blvd., using the southbound lanes. If you'd like to participate, but do not wish to walk the one and a half mile route, there is limited bus transportation available. Please find the school buses parked outside the middle school.

Citizens who would like to view the processional can gather on the west side of the road, starting at the 1300 block of N. Ankeny Blvd. and continuing north to the Ankeny Memorial Cemetery. Additionally, 1000, 8"x12" U.S. American Flags are available for public use free of charge.  Observers are encouraged to use the flags to waive the processional toward the cemetery, as a sign of support for Trooper Toney, the Iowa State Patrol and the Law Enforcement Community.

Flags may be picked up and returned at:

  • Kum & Go at 1825 North Ankeny Boulevard, Ankeny
  • Dahl’s Grocery Store at 1802 North Ankeny Boulevard, Ankeny
  • Hy-Vee Gas at 414 N. Ankeny Boulevard

Note to media: Access to and from the media parking area may be limited once the processional begins. If you plan to cover the processional from another location or attend the graveside services, plan on leaving the funeral early, or find an alternate route to the cemetery.

GRAVESIDE SERVICES

At the conclusion of the processional, a short graveside service, including the 21 Gun Solute and Taps, will be held at the Ankeny Memorial Gardens Cemetery at 4208 N. Ankeny Blvd. in Ankeny, Iowa. Space at the cemetery will be limited. Please follow directions from traffic control personnel.

Note to media: As mentioned previously, space at the graveside ceremony is limited. One still photographer and one video photographer have graciously volunteered to collect and share video. Please contact the Des Moines Register at des-phed@dmreg.com to receive directions on collecting pool photos.
