AWARD PRESENTED TO IOWA DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC SAFETY

Colorado Springs, CO --- The Iowa Department of Public Safety received a highly coveted award which recognizes professional excellence in law enforcement from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA), an international law enforcement accrediting body.

CALEA is the combined effort of four major law enforcement organizations, International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE), National Sheriff’s Association (NSA), and the Police Executive Research Forum (PERF), to establish a body of standards designed to:

• Increase law enforcement agency capabilities to prevent and control crime
• Increase agency effectiveness and efficiency in the delivery of law enforcement services
• Increase cooperation and coordination with other law enforcement agencies and with other agencies of the criminal justice system, and
• Increase citizen and employee confidence in the goals, objectives, policies and practices of the agency.

The Commission provides law enforcement agencies an opportunity to demonstrate that they meet an established set of professional standards.

To achieve this award, the Iowa Department of Public Safety underwent a lengthy process that included establishing or revising policies and procedures, including an independent third party review by CALEA assessors to assure that it met the over 400 standards required of law enforcement agencies.
