DCI Identifies Officers, Suspect Involved in Boone Shooting Incident

Boone, Iowa --- The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) is releasing the names of individuals involved in a shooting incident in Boone, Iowa on Saturday, March 24, 2012. The suspect in question is 48 year old Brian Lee Johnson. Boone Police Officers involved are 32 year old Sgt. John Wiebold (10 year veteran) and 29 year old Officer Korie Barber (5 year veteran).

On March 24, 2012, at approximately 10:48 PM a Boone County Sheriff's Deputy and Boone Police Department Officers Barber and Wiebold went to 827 South Division Street in Boone, to further investigate a previous incident.  Upon arrival at the residence officers spoke with Johnson and a second subject, Jeff Stevens.  During their conversations, Johnson ran from the residence. Officers Barber and Wiebold pursued Johnson through the yard.  While in pursuit, Officer Barber attempted to use non-lethal force by deploying his Taser. The Taser was ineffective. Johnson then turned on officers and pointed a handgun at Barber and Wiebold.  Both officers fired multiple rounds, striking Johnson.  Johnson was immediately transported to the Boone County Hospital and subsequently airlifted to Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines for treatment.

Johnson remains hospitalized with serious injuries.

Officers Barber and Wiebold were not injured in the incident. Both have been placed on administrative leave per department policy. Upon completion of this investigation, the DCI report will be reviewed by the Boone County Attorney who will make a determination on charges related to the use of force.

The Boone County Sheriff's Office has arrested the second subject at the Boone residence. Jeff Stevens faces several charges from an investigation unrelated to the officer involved shooting.

The Boone County Sheriff's Office, Boone Police Department, and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation continue to investigate this shooting incident. For questions, contact SAC Michael Motsinger at (515) 729-3706.

Note: A criminal charge is merely an accusation and a defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
