Iowa State Patrol Accepts Grant for Distracted Driving Simulators

Des Moines, IOWA -- The Iowa Department of Public Safety/Iowa State Patrol Division and State Farm Insurance have teamed up in an effort to increase awareness about distracted driving.

State Farm has awarded the Iowa State Patrol a $25,000 grant to purchase three distracted driving simulators that will be used to teach new teen drivers, as well as more experienced young motorists, the dangers of driving while distracted.  The grant will be presented on Wednesday, January 16th at 1:00 pm at the Iowa State Patrol District 1 Office, located at 260 NW 48th Place in Des Moines.

“The benefits of these simulators will allow Iowa State Patrol Safety Education Officers to educate youth and demonstrate the dangers of the distracted driver,” said Sergeant Scott Bright, Iowa State Patrol Public Information Officer/Safety Education Coordinator.  “By demonstration and continued education, the Iowa State Patrol believes that we will see a decrease in fatalities among young Iowa motorists.”

The Iowa State Patrol Safety Education Unit, which presents more than 6,500 programs annually throughout Iowa,  plans to use the simulators to present programs to various groups, including schools, civic organizations, churches, drivers' education classes, businesses, as well as other events geared toward educating the public about risks associated with distracted driving.

“At State Farm, keeping people safe on our roadways is a proud part of our heritage and who we are today,” said Public Affairs Specialist Angelene Hennes. “We are strongly committed to doing everything we can to help save lives. This partnership with the Iowa State Patrol is a great opportunity to secure educational tools to teach teens safe driving habits.”
