Remember: 511 Before Travel, 911 for Emergencies

Des Moines, IOWA --- As the latest snow storm sweeps across Iowa this afternoon and evening, motorists considering travel should keep two numbers in mind. Remember to check 511 before you travel and dial 911 in an emergency.

The latest roadway conditions can be found by calling 511 on your phone or by visiting the state's www.511ia.org web site. Using this service you can map your route and gain the latest, most accurate information on roadway conditions as it's observed and reported by Department of Transportation staff and State Troopers who are working through the storm.

If you choose to travel along icy or snow covered roadways, please be prepared. The Iowa State Patrol recommends you always travel with an emergency car kit containing warm blankets and clothing, calorie rich foods, water, and a fully charged cell phone. These items will be invaluable in the event you become stranded in the cold.

If your car is disabled or you are involved in a crash, remain in your vehicle and immediately call 911. This call will enable communications operators to mark your location and dispatch law enforcement or emergency responders to help you get to safety as soon as possible. Phone calls to administrative phone lines may delay emergency response. Always call 911 first in an emergency.
