DES MOINES, Iowa – August 27, 2013  Officials of Iowa Speedway and the State Fire Marshal’s Office announced today that an attempt will be made to set a worlds record for the largest number of people simultaneously performing the ‘stop, drop & roll’ fire safety maneuver at the Newton motorsports facility on Saturday, September 7, at approximately 6:45 PM.

The current world record of 1700 people was set by the Indianapolis Fire Department shortly after Iowa broke the previous record in August 2011 at the Iowa State Fair.  Going after the existing record is the benchmark, but representatives of the racetrack and the Iowa Department of Public Safety are confident that a new record willl be set after speedway fans gather for the ‘Prairie Meadows 150’ ARCA Series stock car race.  Two teenage burn survivors and their families will be honored guests to kick off this event.

“With a major race scheduled for the same day, and a great crowd expected, we believe we’ll set a much higher world record for ‘stop, drop & roll’ participants,” said Iowa Speedway Sales Manager, Karen Baldon.  “This is all possible with incredible cooperation from the State Fire Marshal, and of course our great partners, Grinnell Mutual Insurance and Casey’s General Store.”

State Fire Marshal Ray Reynolds says, “We are excited to bring awareness to this important fire safety initiative while also setting a new world record.  Indiana State Fire Marshal Jim Greeson and I enjoy working together to raise awareness and challenge our citizens while creating a friendly rivalry.  At the end of the day, this event will showcase Iowan’s fire prevention attitude and may someday save lives in a moment of need.”

A special discounted ticket price of $15 for adult has been established for this world record attempt participants.  This includes an upper level grandstand seat for the ‘Prairie Meadows 150’ race, scheduled for 8 PM on Saturday, September 7, 2013.  Please join us for free access to the Casey’s Fan Walk, free event t-shirt to the first 2500 participants, and an opportunity to be a world record holder.

Persons wishing to participate in the ‘stop, drop & roll’ world record attempt may order the special discounted tickets by calling the track’s ticketing hotline at 866-RUSTY-GO (787-8946), or by stopping by the Iowa Speedway Ticket Office at 3333 Rusty Wallace Drive in Newton, and asking for the “Stop, Drop & Roll’ discount.

For additional information regarding the world record attempt, please contact State Fire Marshal Ray Reynolds at (515) 725-6145.
