State Fire Marshal Division Reminds Iowans
Of Cooking Safety On Thanksgiving Holiday

Thanksgiving Dinner Pic

The Iowa Department of Public Safety reminds you Thanksgiving is the leading day of the year for home fires involving cooking equipment.  The kitchen is the heart of the home, especially at Thanksgiving.  Kids love to be involved in holiday preparations.  Safety in the kitchen is important, especially on Thanksgiving Day when there is a lot of activity at the home.

Use these safety tips to ensure your family has a fire safe holiday season:

  • Stay in the kitchen when you are cooking on the stovetop so you can keep an eye on the food.

  • Stay in the home when you are cooking your turkey and check on it frequently.

  • Establish a 3 feet safety zone to keep kids away from a hot stove.

  • Keep knives out of the reach of children.

  • Turn cooking pan handles towards the inside to keep kids from grabbing them.

  • Never leave children alone in a room with a lit candle.

  • Make sure your smoke alarms are working.  Test them by pushing the test button.

The State Fire Marshal reminds you FIRE IS EVERYONE’S FIGHT.  For more safety tips contact the State Fire Marshal Division at 515-725-6145.
