On Thursday, May 8, 2014, at approximately 10:49 P.M., the Cedar County Communications Center received a 911 call of a possible gunshot in the 800 block of 8th Street in Durant, Iowa.  Initial reports indicated a female was screaming for help and was possibly injured.

Officers from the Durant Police Department, Wilton Police Department and Walcott Police Department responded to the emergency call.  Deputies from the Cedar County Sheriff’s Office, Scott County Sheriff’s Office, Muscatine County Sheriff’s Office and the Iowa State Patrol also responded. Upon arrival, law enforcement found Scott Douglas Oetzel (DOB: 06/03/1971) barricaded in his former residence of 805 8th Street. Upon entry into the home, law enforcement found Oetzel deceased from an apparent self-inflicted shotgun wound.  An autopsy will be performed by Dr. Dennis Klein on Saturday, May 10, 2014 at the Iowa Office of the State Medical Examiner in Ankeny.

The female resident managed to escape after being assaulted by Oetzel.  She was treated and released from Genesis Medical Center.
