Inside the 38th DPS Basic Academy

Johnston, IOWA – The Iowa Department of Public Safety’s 38th DPS Basic Academy is well underway. For 20 weeks, 15 peace officer candidates will call Camp Dodge home as they participate in the Academy. 

During the Academy, the recruits will complete courses on laws of arrest, search and seizures, defensive tactics, arrest techniques, precision driving, firearms, emergency management services, criminal law, human relations, physical fitness and motor vehicle law, along with many other courses.

Upon successful completion of the Academy, on November 7, 2014, the candidates will graduate as Troopers providing law enforcement duties to the citizens of Iowa.  

The media is invited to get a behind-the-scenes look at the DPS Academy on Tuesday, July 29, 2014, from 1 P.M. to 5 P.M. Media will be allowed video opportunities of the candidates in action at the academy and also visit with the candidates about their new journey.  

The Iowa Department of Public Safety is now accepting applications for the next DPS Basic Academy, set to begin in the late fall of 2014.  For more information, please visit
