Des Moines, IOWA-- Labor Day marks the end of summer and many families will be traveling various distances to this holiday weekend. The Iowa State Patrol would like to remind all motorists the long, three-day holiday weekend will mean increased traffic on all Iowa’s roadways. The increase in traffic can translate into increased collisions, serious injuries, fatalities, and traffic delays. The Iowa State Patrol hopes to decrease all of those.

Last year, during the Labor Day weekend, four individuals lost their lives on Iowa roadways.  One of those fatalities involved a motorist who was drinking and driving.  In 2013, Iowa had 317 fatalities, 75 of those were alcohol or drug related. That is why the Iowa State Patrol is reminding all motorists to think twice before drinking and driving, especially this Labor Day holiday.

The Iowa State Patrol offers the following tips for safe travel during the Labor Day weekend.

  • Don’t drink and drive.
  • Eliminate all distractions while behind the wheel.
  • Make sure everyone buckles up.
  • Slow down – especially in bad weather, construction areas and heavy traffic.
  • Slow down and move over for all law enforcement and other emergency responder vehicles, as well as tow trucks, stopped on the side of the road with their emergency lights activated.
  • Don’t drive fatigued.
  • Drive defensively, as holiday travel may present additional challenges.

The Iowa State Patrol hopes you and your family have a safe and enjoyable Labor Day Holiday weekend.

If you have any further questions, please contact Sergeant Scott Bright at (515) 745-2863.
