DPS Recognized with National Award

Orlando, FLORIDA -- The Iowa Department of Public Safety received a National Law Enforcement Challenge Award at the 2014 International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) Conference in Orlando, Florida on October 28, 2014. The National Law Enforcement Challenge (NLEC) awards recognize highway safety efforts over the previous calendar year (the 2014 Challenge recognizes 2013 efforts).

The Department received 1st place honors in the category of Regional Enforcement Efforts for the I-80 Challenge conducted in July of 2013. The I-80 Challenge was designed to focus on the entire 2,900 miles of Interstate 80 to create public awareness through both an increase in law enforcement presence and media outreach.    DPS coordinated the I-80 Challenge as a collaborative effort with the 11 state patrols which I-80 passes through.  The National Highway Traffic Administration and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration also threw their support behind this innovative project. One of the goals of the I-80 challenge was to have eight days of increased enforcement efforts aimed at preventing any fatalities.
