State Fire Marshal Division Releases More Information in Granger Fatal Fire

Des Moines, IOWA – The Iowa Department of Public Safety’s (DPS) State Fire Marshal Division (SFM) is releasing new information in a fatal fire that occurred on the morning of December 15, 2014 in Granger, Iowa.

Investigators with the State Fire Marshal Division have ruled the cause of the fire as accidental, likely caused by smoking. The fire is believed to have started on a couch, where the victim of the fire was located by relatives.  Three people were in the house at the time of the fire, two of the three were able to escape safely with family pets.

During an autopsy performed at the Iowa Office of the State Medical Examiner in Ankeny, 55-year-old James O’Connor was positively identified through dental records. O’Connor’s cause of death was determined to be thermal injuries and manner of death has been ruled accidental.

The DPS State Fire Marshal Division, Iowa Office of the State Medical Examiner, Granger Fire Department and Dallas County Sheriff’s Office assisted in the investigation.
