I-80/I-35 Border-to-Border Safety
Initiative Concludes

DES MOINES, Iowa – Sixteen State Police/Highway Patrol Agencies participated in the 3 day heightened enforcement effort August 28 through August 30 to eliminate traffic fatalities across the nation along the 4,500 miles of Interstate 80 and Interstate 35.  This effort proved to be extremely successful as no fatalities were reported from any of the states that participated.

This initiative was conducted with the goals of reducing crashes and  saving lives. “The collaboration of law enforcement officers for this traffic safety campaign is admirable and highlights the importance of high visibility enforcement,” said Colonel Michael Van Berkum, Chief of the Iowa State Patrol.

The dates of the project were selected after a 5 year review of crash data, which shows the month of August, being one of the deadliest months for motorists on these interstates.

In the 16 participating states, there were 8,582 traffic citations issued and 166 impaired drivers removed from the interstates.  There were also 168 drug arrests made and 1,113 seatbelt citations issued.

In Iowa a total of 1,549 traffic citations issued and 18 impaired drivers taken off the road.  There were 9 drug arrests and 41 seatbelt citations issued.

This successful initiative leads us into one of the most dangerous holiday weekends for Iowa motorists. Last year, there were 5 fatalities including 1 alcohol related during the 3 day Labor Day weekend.
