Second Update on DCI Investigation in Burlington

Burlington, IOWA -- The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) continues its’ investigation into the January 6, 2015, shooting death of Autumn Steele.

All individuals involved in the investigation have been interviewed to include, but not limited to, Officer Jesse Hill, Autumn Steele's husband, and eye witnesses.  DCI has collected and reviewed all audio and video recordings captured at the time of the shooting.

The DCI is currently waiting for autopsy results to be released.   As part of this investigation, various items of evidence were submitted to the DCI Criminalistic Laboratory for analysis.  Once results from the Iowa DCI Crime Laboratory and autopsy results from the Iowa Office of the State Medical Examiner are received, the DCI will forward this information along with its’ investigative findings to the Des Moines County Attorney’s Office for review.

Background:

On Tuesday, January 6, at approximately 10:25 a.m., officers from the Burlington Police Department responded to a domestic dispute in the 100-block of South Garfield Avenue in Burlington, Iowa, which resulted in a shooting incident. The Burlington Police Department contacted the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) to investigate the incident.

Autumn Mae Steele, 34, died while being treated for an apparent gunshot she received when officers of the Burlington Police Department responded to a domestic call in the 100 block of South Garfield Ave, in Burlington. An autopsy took place on Thursday, January 8, 2015, at the University of Iowa Decedent Care Unit.  Initial findings indicate Officer Jesse Hill fired his weapon twice with one round striking Steele in the mid torso.  Officer Hill was taken to the Great River Medical Center and received treatment for dog bite(s) and then released.  Officer Hill has been employed as an officer for the Burlington Police Department since August 13, 2013.
