UPDATE on DCI Investigation in Burlington

Burlington, IOWA -- Autumn Mae Steele, 34, died while being treated for an apparent gunshot she received when officers of the Burlington Police Department responded to a domestic call in the 100 block of South Garfield Ave. An autopsy will take place on Thursday, January 8, 201,5 at the University of Iowa Decedent Care Unit.  Initial findings indicate Officer Jesse Hill fired his weapon twice with one round striking Steele in the mid torso.  Officer Hill was taken to the Great River Medical Center and received treatment for dog bite(s) and then released.  Officer Hill has been employed as an officer for the Burlington Police Department since August 13, 2013. 

The Burlington Police Department and the Iowa of Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) recognize the impact this incident has on the Steele family, Officer Hill, fellow officers of the Burlington Police Department, and the community alike.   With that said, the Iowa DCI continues to conduct interviews and examine all physical and forensic evidence to ensure a thorough and impartial investigation. 

No additional information will be released until all parties are interviewed and the findings of the autopsy are known. 

On Tuesday, January 6, at approximately 10:25 a.m., officers from the Burlington Police Department responded to a domestic dispute in the 100-block of South Garfield Avenue in Burlington, Iowa, which resulted in a shooting incident.  One person is deceased and one Officer is receiving treatment for non-life threatening injuries. The name of the deceased will be released upon notification of the family. The Burlington Police Department contacted the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation to investigate the incident. The investigation continues and further information will be released when it becomes available.
