2015 Sullivan Brothers' Award of Valor Ceremony to be Held

DES MOINES, Iowa – The Iowa Department of Public Safety (DPS) will host the 38th Annual Sullivan Brothers’ Award of Valor Ceremony on Thursday, November 12, 2015. The event will take place at the State Capitol Rotunda at 10:30AM.

Governor Branstad, Lt. Governor Reynolds and DPS Commissioner Roxann Ryan will honor five individuals with the 2015 Sullivan Brothers’ Award of Valor for their heroic efforts in saving the lives of Iowans during critical times of need.

Trooper Tracy Bohlen, Iowa State Patrol – On April 26, 2015, Trooper Bohlen was on I-35 near Ankeny when he noticed a pickup with a trailer stopped in the middle lane.  When Trooper Bohlen approached the vehicle he noticed the driver, a male, suffering uncontrollable seizures. Bohlen eventually pulled the driver onto the interstate where he performed CPR.  A retired Trooper’s wife, who is a nurse, stopped at the scene to help and eventually Polk County Sheriff’s Deputies arrived on scene and placed an AED on the man and Ankeny Rescue transported the man to a Des Moines hospital.  Thanks to Trooper Bohlen’s quick thinking and heroic actions, the man survived.

Cedar Falls Firefighters Eric Jensen and Kyle Bovy – On April 26, 2014, Cedar Falls Fire Rescue were dispatched to a residential fire with a person trapped. Jensen and Bovy entered the house with high heat and zero visibility. Jensen and Bovy located the unconscious man and removed him from the house. The man was flown to the U of I hospital and with months of rehab, he made a full recovery. Kyle Bovy is now a full-time firefighter with the Waterloo Fire Department

Lt. Bradley Melton, Nevada Fire Department & Officer Chris Brandes, Nevada Police Department – On February 19, 2015, Nevada Police and Fire were dispatched to a 4-story apartment building fire. Officer Brandes went door-to-door checking and evacuating each apartment. Officer Brandes went back and checked a previously locked apartment and eventually made entry to find heavy black smoke and the feet of a man dangling over a couch.  Officer Brandes crawled into the apartment and tried to rescue the combative and confused man, but was unable to and had to retreat because he started to become overcome by smoke.  Lt. Melton arrived on scene a short time later and with a self-contained breathing apparatus, he chose to enter the apartment with no visibility and heavy smoke. Lt. Melton found the combative man and drug him to safety. The man was eventually flown to a Des Moines hospital and was placed in a medically-induced coma because he had burns to his airway. Three weeks later, the man walked out of the hospital on his own power.

The Sullivan Brothers' Award of Valor shall be awarded to peace officers and firefighters who, while serving in an official capacity, distinguished themselves by the performance of an heroic act in excess of normal demands of police or fire service where the person was fully aware of the threat to his/her personal safety.
