State Fire Marshal Division Reminds Iowans of Thanksgiving Safety Tips

DES MOINES, Iowa – Thanksgiving is the leading day for house fires in the United States.  Families should be extra cautious while preparing food this holiday season.  As you start preparing your holiday schedule and organizing that large family feast, remember that by following a few simple safety tips you can enjoy time with your loved ones and keep yourself and your family safe from fire.

Kyle Gorsh, Fire Prevention Bureau Chief - State Fire Marshal Division, states “The most important thing you can do to prevent cooking fires is to stay in the kitchen so you can keep an eye on what’s cooking.”
According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), unattended cooking was by far the leading contributing factor in cooking fires and fire deaths.

The Iowa Department of Public Safety’s (DPS) State Fire Marshal Division (SFM) and the NFPA also report there are dangers associated with the use of outdoor gas fueled turkey fryers that cook the turkey in hot oil.
“The use of turkey fryers can lead to devastation burns, other injuries as well as the destruction of property”, Gorsh said.

Safety Tips

  • Keep children away from the stove. While cooking on the stove children should stay three feet away.
  • Make sure children stay away from hot food and liquids. The steam or splash from vegetables, gravy, coffee, or even the oven can cause serious burns.
  • Stay in the kitchen when you are cooking on the stovetop to keep a close eye on the food.
  • Make sure your smoke alarms are working. Test them by pushing the test button and replace the batteries if needed.
