Update: Bedford Child Death Investigation

BEDFORD, Iowa -- On Friday May 22, 2015, the Taylor County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 911 call for a child not breathing at 806 Washington St. in Bedford, Iowa.  When Deputies arrived they located a 3 year old female, now identified as Janyiah King, unresponsive. King was pronounced dead by the Taylor County Medical Examiner.  The Iowa Department of Public Safety's (DPS) Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) was called in to assist with the suspicious death of the child. The child’s father, Charles Hall, 25, and his girlfriend, April Clair, 25, were arrested and charged with Child Endangerment, a class “C” felony, on May 22, 2015.

On Saturday, May 23, 2015, Iowa Chief Deputy Medical Examiner, Dennis Klein, MD, performed the autopsy at the Iowa Office of the State Medical Examiner in Ankeny, Iowa.  The full autopsy results are still pending and the investigation continues. King’s death has been ruled a homicide.

On Thursday July 2, 2015, the Taylor County Attorney’s Office added a charge of Murder in the First Degree against Charles Hall. Hall also stands accused of his initial charge of Child Endangerment.  No additional charges have been filed against April Clair. Clair still faces her initial charge of Child Endangerment.

Note: A criminal charge is merely an accusation and a defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
