Iowa DCI Investigating Schleswig Officer-Involved Shooting

SCHLESWIG, Iowa -- On March 9, 2016, the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office received a call from a concerned citizen requesting a welfare check on a male subject residing at the Schleswig Manner Apartments located at 100 Fir Street in Schleswig.  Deputies arrived at the apartment complex at approximately 6:20 PM and approached the apartment; the male subject pointed a long gun at the deputies and threatened to shoot them if they didn’t back away.  Deputies removed other residents of the apartment complex from their apartments for their safety.  A standoff with the suspect ensued, negotiators from Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, Crawford County Sheriff’s Office and the Iowa State Patrol tried to communicate with the suspect and resolve the incident peacefully.

At approximately 11:45 PM, after approximately a four-and-a-half hour standoff the subject opened the door and pointed a long gun in the direction of officers and fired one round, a Crawford County Deputy returned fire striking the male subject.  The subject was life-flighted to University of Nebraska Medicine (UNMC) in Omaha, with non-life threatening injuries.

The incident is currently under investigation by the Crawford County Attorney’s Office the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department and the Iowa Department of Public Safety’s Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI).

The name of the subject is not being released at this time pending notification of family members.
