Names Released in Schleswig Officer-Involved Shooting

SCHLESWIG, Iowa -- The suspect in the Schleswig shooting has been identified as 45 year old James Scott Champion.  Champion is still recovering at UNMC in Omaha.  Crawford County Deputy Lt. Corey Utech has been identified as the deputy who returned fire, firing two rounds striking Champion twice in the torso.  Lt. Utech is an 11 year veteran of the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office. 

Following the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office Policy and Procedures, Lt Utech is currently on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.  Champion is facing two (2) counts of Assault on a Police Officer with a dangerous weapon (Class D Felony). 

This investigation is still ongoing by the Iowa Department of Public Safety’s (DPS) Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.
