Names Released in Cedar Rapids Shooting

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The Iowa Department of Public Safety’s (DPS) Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) is assisting the Cedar Rapids Police Department with an officer-involved shooting that happened Monday evening, September 12, 2016, at the Valley High Apartments, 1735 Edgewood Road NW, in Cedar Rapids.

Officers responded to a domestic disturbance involving a 25 year old female and Markell Lamarr Bivins, 25. The female was transported to a local hospital with multiple stab wounds, believed to be from Bivins. She has undergone surgery and is expected to live.

Markell Lamarr Bivins was shot during the incident and did succumb to his injuries. Initial findings indicate that both Cedar Rapids Police officers discharged their service weapons.

An autopsy has been scheduled on Bivins at the Iowa Office of the State Medical Examiner in Ankeny, Iowa.

This continues to be an active investigation. The names of the officers will not be released until they have been interviewed by the DCI in coming days.

Media contact: Iowa DCI Special Agent in Charge, Richard Rahn at (563) 370-5109.

Note: A criminal charge is merely an accusation and a defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
