Names of Officers Involved in Shooting Released

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The Iowa Department of Public Safety’s (DPS) Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) is continuing to assist the Cedar Rapids Police Department with an officer-involved shooting that happened Monday evening, September 12, 2016, at the Valley High Apartments, 1735 Edgewood Road NW, in Cedar Rapids.

Officers responded to a domestic disturbance involving a 25 year old female and 25 year old Markell Lamarr Bivins. The female was transported to a local hospital with multiple stab wounds, believed to be from Bivins.  Markell Lamarr Bivins was shot during the incident and did succumb to his injuries. Initial findings indicate that both Cedar Rapids Police officers discharged their service weapons.

The two police officers that were involved with this incident have been interviewed by Iowa DCI Special Agents.  The officers are Jeremiah White and Ashleigh Steil.  According to the Cedar Rapids Police Department, both officers were hired on June 2, 2008. Both officers have been placed on administrative leave per Cedar Rapids Police Department policy.

This is an ongoing investigation and no further information is available.
