West Branch Man Charged with Willful Injury, Domestic Abuse

WEST BRANCH, Iowa -- On Monday, October 10, 2016, special agents with the Iowa Department of Public Safety’s (DPS) Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) began a willful injury investigation.  The DCI was requested by the West Branch Police Department, as well as the Cedar County Attorney’s Office, to conduct the investigation.  The DCI was asked to assist based on the severity of injuries sustained by the victim. 

On the morning of October 10, 2016, the West Branch Police Department was called to 613 West Orange Street in West Branch. This is the home of the Mike Kelley, 39.  Upon arrival, law enforcement was directed to Kelley’s bedroom and once inside the bedroom found a 35 year-old woman.  It was apparent the woman had been severely beaten.  She was transported to the University of Iowa Hospital where she remains in critical condition.

Michael Kelley was arrested by the West Branch Police Department for Willful Injury Causing Serious Injury (Class C felony) and Domestic Abuse Assault, (Aggravated Misdemeanor).  Kelley is currently housed in the Cedar County Jail. 

This investigation was conducted by the Iowa Department of Public Safety’s (DPS) Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI), with the assistance of the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation’s Criminalistics Laboratory, West Branch Police Department and the Cedar County Attorney’s Office.
