Former Jail Administrator Charged with First Degree Theft

TIPTON, Iowa -- In January 2016, Special Agents with the Iowa Department of Public Safety’s (DPS) Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) began a financial investigation of the Cedar County Sheriff’s Office.  The DCI was requested by the Cedar County Sheriff’s Office as well as the Cedar County Attorney’s Office to conduct the investigation.  Additionally, the investigation was conducted jointly with the State of Iowa Auditor’s Office. 

Daron Lance Wilkinson, 49, served as the Jail Administrator for the Cedar County Sheriff’s Office in Tipton, IA for a time period to include May 2013 until December 2015.  Investigators examined the Cedar County Jail’s financial records along with various personal financial records linked to Wilkinson covering the time period of April of 2013 until January 2016.  The investigation determined that among other things, Wilkinson continually misappropriated Cedar County Jail funds for personal-financial gain.
 
During his tenure as Jail Administrator for the Cedar County Sheriff’s Office, Wilkinson engaged in various acts that were committed for financial gain on a continuing basis.  Wilkinson used the position of Jail Administrator of the Cedar County Jail to steal, misappropriate, or embezzle in excess of $36,000 dollars of funds from the Cedar County Sheriff’s Office which is located in Tipton, Iowa.

On October 15, 2016, Daron Lance Wilkinson was charged with Theft-First Degree.  Theft-First Degree constitutes a situation where a defendant unlawfully and willfully misappropriates property exceeding $10,000.00 in value. 

This investigation was conducted by the Iowa Department of Public Safety’s (DPS) Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI), with the assistance of the Cedar County Sheriff’s Office the Cedar County Attorney’s office the State of Iowa Auditor’s Office and the Iowa Attorney General’s Office. 

It should be noted that all defendants are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
