Murphy Departing from the Iowa Department of Public Safety

DES MOINES, Iowa – The Iowa Department of Public Safety (DPS) Public Information Officer, Alex Murphy, will be leaving the Department on Thursday, March 9, 2017, to take a similar position with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.

Murphy has served as the Public Information Officer since March 2014, representing the Department through its Investigative Operations, which include the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI), Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement (DNE), State Fire Marshal Division (SFM) and the Iowa Division of Intelligence and Fusion Center (DOI). Murphy also represented the Office of the Commissioner.

“Alex has been a trusted member of our Department, and he will be missed. He has been a reliable source for information about significant crimes, major events, departmental publications, and internal communications,” said Commissioner Roxann Ryan.  “In addition to his regular duties, his visual and video talent has allowed us to share information, capture history, and create art, as we convey the stories about public safety in Iowa. His new position offers new and different professional challenges, and we look forward to working with him in his new role at the Department of Natural Resources.”

“I cannot thank everyone at the Department of Public Safety enough for the most memorable and enjoyable past three years,” said DPS Public Information Officer Alex Murphy.  “It truly has been a privilege to get to work side by side with all of our State Troopers, Special Agents and others in the Department, and to represent and be a voice for them. The work that each individual does day in and day out is remarkable. During my time, I also had the privilege to meet and work with the hundreds Iowa’s finest serving at police departments and sheriff’s offices across the state, as well as other state and federal agencies. I am so grateful to everyone who has had an impact on me during my time at DPS and it was my pleasure to serve the citizens of Iowa in this capacity and represent Iowa’s largest law enforcement agency.”

Murphy will continue to serve in a volunteer role as the coordinator and co-chair of the Iowa Peace Officer Memorial.

Murphy grew up Baxter, Iowa, and earned his bachelor’s degree in Mass Communications from Grand View University. Before joining the Department of Public Safety, Murphy worked for KCCI-TV as a reporter, photojournalist and editor, and served as a Communications Specialist and Videographer for the Media Relations Department at Iowa State University. He resides in Des Moines and attends Valley Church in West Des Moines. In the future, Alex can be reached at
